I think DaimlerChrysler did a good job of taking a very capable off-road vehicle and upgrading it with some
features to make it even better.
The fit and finish appear to be very well in spite of a lot of plastic materials.
Having driven a Toyota Tacoma XtraCab for the last 7-plus years, this vehicle handles a lot different (which
I had figured having previously owned an 81 Jeep Scrambler).
It rides rather rough on the highways; has a tendency to bounce all over the road!
It's noisy due to the soft top, but not as noisy as previous models!
Having the 32" BFGoodrich MT tires makes it a bit taller than my Tacoma and thus having to somewhat jump
up to get in and kind of slide out to get out! (does not have step rails or nerf bars!) (roll bar
grab handles will help this situation!)
The seats are comfortable (I like the YES Essentials materials although I haven't needed any of their capabilities
- yet!)
Went to a do-it-yourself car wash and afterwards did not find any water leaks.
The buttons for changing the display on the Compass/Mini-Computer and the Odometer/Trip Odometer Reset are
extremely difficult to reach!
Instructions for lowering the top take up 14 pages in the owner's manual! I hope it's easier than that to lower.
Plastic air dam on front needs to be replaced with skid plate.
Spare tire carrier does not open separately from the tailgate. I see an area between the spare tire carrier and
tail gate that will be hard to keep clean!
Vehicle is great off-road!
Only had to put it into 4LO two times! Kept it in 4HI all the rest of the time.
Got stuck twice: 1st time hill was too soft - could not get a running start! Don't remember reason for getting
stuck second time!
Attempted to drive it up on the edge of the rock garden (won't go across the rock garden until I have the front
and engine/transmission skid plates installed).
Went well, although I will have to eventually replace the front bumper - the plastic part. It got torn up kind
of bad in both the "can crushers."
Other than that it was a wonderful time - looks like I will be enjoying this vehicle for a long time.

Note: I am the soft top-equipped Rubicon. The other Rubicon that was with me was a 2006 with a 3" lift.
Day-to-Day Driving Experiences (responses to previous comments):
Original comment: Sure has a short turning radius!
15-month experience comment: Short turning radius makes this Jeep handle very
well, quick, and responsive!
Original comment: Soft top allows a lot of outside noise in!
15-month experience comment: No change; getting used to the noise level.
Original comment: Rides rough; notice every bump and hole in the streets!
15-month experience comment: Yep still rides rough, but appears to be softening
a bit.
Original comment: Overall, not bad - just going to take some getting used to!
15-month experience comment: Getting used to it and loving it!
Original comment: I think DaimlerChrysler did a good job of taking a very

15-month experience comment: Especially like the electronic swaybar disconnect!
Shifts into and out of 4LO quite easy (once I figured out the correct way to shift!).
Original comment: The fit and finish appear to be very well in spite of a lot
of plastic materials.
15-month experience comment: Other than the cheap plastic materials which
dominate the interior and are easily scratched, the fit and finish are still holding up well!
Original comment: Having driven a Toyota Tacoma XtraCab for the last 7-plus

15-month experience comment: Love the high maneuverability of the 07 Rubicon.
Off-road it doesn't take much to maneuver around (and over) obstacles.
Original comment: It rides rather rough on the highways; has a tendency to
bounce all over the road!
15-month experience comment: Has less bounce, but still can feel most bumps in
the road, but what the heck, it's a short wheelbase vehicle!
Original comment: It's noisy due to the soft top, but not as noisy as previous
models!
15-month experience comment: Still somewhat noisy, but it's a soft top!
Original comment: Having the 32" BFGoodrich MT tires makes it a bit taller

15-month experience comment: Roll bar grab handles help a lot (I'm a relatively
short person - only 5' 4"!
Original comment: The seats are comfortable (I like the YES Essentials materials
although I haven't needed any of their capabilities - yet!)
15-month experience comment: Added some CoverKing seat covers; made the seats
even more comfortable.
Original comment: Went to a do-it-yourself car wash and afterwards did not find
any water leaks.
15-month experience comment: Wind noise and water leaks - very wet and noisy
(whistles!). Just got back from dealer and they noticed I had improperly positioned a piece of rubber on the
top of both doors. Maybe that will reduce wind noise and water leakage - we'll see.
Original comment: The buttons for changing the display on the
Compass/Mini-Computer and the Odometer/Trip Odometer Reset are extremely difficult to reach!
15-month experience comment: Figured out how to access those buttons; who'd ever
think a driver would need fingers that small and that could bend like a contortionist???
Original comment: Instructions for lowering the top take up 14 pages in the
owner's manual! I hope it's easier than that to lower.
15-month experience comment: It IS easier than
that! While I've taken it down only a couple of times, I can it down in 10 minutes and takes approximately 15
minutes to put back up - without any instructions!
Original comment: Plastic air dam on front needs to be replaced with skid plate.
15-month experience comment: Yep, it's been replaced with an actual skid plate
that also protects the electronic swaybar disconnect (very important piece of machinery!).
Original comment: Spare tire carrier does not open separately from the tailgate.
I see an area between the spare tire carrier and tail gate that will be hard to keep clean!
15-month experience comment: Surprisingly I figured out a way to keep it clean
so not a problem, although I do wish the spare tire carrier opened separately from the tail gate; maybe with
an after-market bumper???
Off-Road Driving Experiences:
Original comment: Vehicle is great off-road!
15-month experience comment: Sure is! Have had it off-road in different types of
situations and it has performed as expected.
Original comment: Only had to put it into 4LO two times! Kept it in 4HI all the
rest of the time.
15-month experience comment: With the aggressive tread on the BF Goodrich tires,
4LO hasn't been needed much. The few times I've needed to put it into 4LO, it really pulled hard!
The thing I really miss is the ability to use the lockers in 4HI. With the 03 thru 06 Rubicons, it was a simple
wiring modification. With all the computer-controlled stuff on the JKs, it's a bit more involved, but not that
much. I anticipate doing this mod in the near future!
Original comment: Attempted to drive it up on the edge of the rock garden at the
local ORV park.
15-month experience comment: Got both a front and engine/transmission skid plate
installed and finally made the trip across the rock garden! Not difficult at all. Rubicon handled it very well.
In addition to the scuffing of the "can crushers", I now have a nice dent in the very left end of the
plastic part of the bumper: Battle Scar!!! Am looking at some type of modification to the plastic ends of the
bumper (as a short term solution), so not a problem! Will eventually replace with better front and rear bumpers.
Due to the width of the current front bumper, I can not get the tires on some obstacles so I can't get over
them!
