How to set up your GPS for use in the field

(menu created with Tigra Menu Gold)

The images on this web page were taken from a Garmin® eTrex Venture HC GPS. Your screens may look different, but should have similar information.

Step 1: Turn on your GPS

Step 2: Allow GPS to acquire satellites:

GPS Satellites

You may have to go to the satellite page on your GPS to view the satellites.

Allow your GPS to acquire at least 3 satellites; 4 or more is better!

Step 3: Verify the map datum settings in your GPS:

WGS 84: World Geodetic System 1984; a datum for the whole world as used by most GPS units; DEFAULT "out of the box" datum.

NAD 27: North American Datum 1927; used by older USGS and Canadian topographic maps.

NAD 83: North American Datum 1983; used by newer USGS and Canadian topographic maps in the future.

NOTE: You will have to go to the settings page to verify the datum:

Step 4: Verify the format of your latitude and longitude settings. They will be in one of the following formats:

hddd.dddd ° - decimal degrees
hddd ° mm.mmm' - degrees decimal minutes
hddd ° mm'ss.s" - degrees minutes seconds

Again, you will have to go to the settings page to verify the format:

If you receive the geographic coordinates in the wrong format or need to change them , you can use the following website to get the correct format:

NOW YOU ARE READY TO START!!!

Step 5: Mark your current position.

Press the appropriate button to "mark" your waypoint. A screen similar to the following will appear:

⇐ Check the format!!!

Step 6: Change the waypoint name to something you can easily identify with!

Naming Waypoints

Step 7: Be sure to save the waypoint when all the entries on the screen are correct!

In the above example, highlighting "OK" (in the black/dark area) and pressing your enter button will save only the name of the waypoint.

After saving the name of the waypoint, you still need to highlight OK (bottom right corner of the above screen) to save the waypoint.

Step 8: Now enter the next waypoint. One way to do this is to again mark your present position, then change the screen to the desired entries.

Spacer On some GPS units, it may be easier to create waypoints using a waypoint edit or create screen.

(OPTIONAL) Step 9: Create a route using the waypoints you just entered.
